NET PERCEPTIONS - We initiated coverage on Net Perceptions this week
with a Buy rating. Net Perceptions has developed recommendation engine
software which it uses as a foundation for specific products aimed at
various selling and marketing functions across multiple Web
applications. Net Perceptions in essence creates a “virtual
shopkeeper”, that learns what products a customer likes/dislikes and
makes appropriate recommendations in “real time”, meaning the time taken
to analyze the Web user and query the database is imperceptible to the
user. We believe there is considerable upside to our remaining
estimates for 1999. We believe the model is poised for fast growth and
a great margin structure. Short term, we believe Q1 numbers will exceed
our estimates, based on the strength of the company's core eCommerce
product. Looking out a year or more, we believe rapid customer growth
and new products will prove our future estimates very conservative. We
believe the company can grow into and past its valuation by continuing
to help merchants and advertisers reach the right audience online. We
believe the only catalysts we will see for the next several quarters
will be positive, and that the company's focus on such a large market
opportunity will help it grow into a much larger valuation.
