I agree completely. I don't believe Microsoft has a precise roadmap for what it will be selling in 5 years or 10. I also figure that's a good thing. Some of the recent investments may turn out to have been busts, but at least they've guaranteed that the company will be a player in this changing environment where computing devices become something different than they've been in the past decade.

They seem to be playing some version of the futurist's method that has gained prominence in the past few years: setting out a series of scenarios, setting probabilities on them, and then making sure that they're in the best position to benefit somewhat even from the worst possible scenario.
