larry...the perception doesn't have to become reality, as long as it is believed it gives the same effect....holding down stock price...

to clarify "growth through m&a with increased dell stock price"...as in the ability of your competitor through spin in reducing your market cap and desirability as an equity holding....will negate any "increase' in share price, and along with it the potential of using inflated stock for m&a purchases...ala the internet style of m&a...

we must determine if dell is more than a "white box maker", and if the answer is truly yes, than the question in my mind is why the financial world is viewing them as this stagnant type of entity at the present moment. why not dispel the image clearly painted by the competition...why "the silence of the dells"....understand at the recent msdw event this week, msdw came away warm and fuzzy, still strong rec, but no clue of the future, beyond growing the core business,which the world "believes" as dying a slow death....why?
