Reread these terrible words (ignore the self-congratulation if you can):

What this means is that the two of you get identical sentences. And I submit it conveys the meaning even better than:

I sentence each of you to twenty lashes.>>

If they have the same meaning, then 'I paid $20 for both' means the same as 'I paid $20 for each.'
