You are wrong. Par value does not refer to an obligation. The market place determines what a stock is worth.

"The Par Value is an arbitrary value assigned to the stock. When a corporation is formed, a par value (usually between 10 cents and $1.00) is given to the newly issued stock. It is important to note that this price has nothing to do with the value of each share. The price of each share is determined in the marketplace by investor expectations."
