If I killed the man beating his wife would I not be taking the law into my own hands and be guilty of murder (of some degree)?

Read your law. If you prevented the commission of a violent life threatening crime by killing the perpetrator, its called justifiable homicide.

It is unlikely, so long as their was sufficient evidence to prove you acted to prevent a murder, that you ever be convicted by any jury.

I'm glad you're not my neighbor. You'd just sit back and justify your inaction by saying "its none of my business" or "I don't want to get involved".

Regards,

Ron
