To shine some more light on the 256AV capacity problem, here is NeoMagic's annoucement from last fall, saying that they started producing the 256AV chip at the Mitsubishi foundry (their long standing foundry partner), after being initially produced by Toshiba.

Apparently, even with two different sources of supply for the 256AV, they are not able to satisfy demand. One question that remains is whether the 0.25 micron capacity shortage is aggravated by a worsened business relationship with either Mitsubishi or Toshiba.

It is a peculiar fact that Toshiba, NeoMagic's principal foundry partner for the 256AV, actually did not design the 256AV product into their highest volume mainstream product lines, as was reported late last year. Consequently, Toshiba is least affected by the 256AV chip shortage (even without any contractual preferential treatment they might get from being a foundry), compared to other tier-1 OEMs.
