Have you even been following the events in the Balkans since Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, and Bosnia split off from Serbia!!!!!????? Where have you been?? Pull your head out of the sand and look at the results of Milosevic's actions since he came to power.
He isolated every ethnicity possible under Tito's FRY, revoked Kosovar autonomy, staged thousands of rallies proclaiming Serbian "uniqueness" while ignoring the pleas of minorities for representation. He invoked fear mongering in the outlying Serbian enclaves in Croatia and Bosnia in hopes of bringing those geographic regions under Serbia control. He incited the Bosnian Serbs to take aggressive action against their relatively defenseless Bosnian Muslim neighbors, laying seige to Sarajevo for years, and gave them all the weapons they needed with which to do it with.
Do dance around the point, Chris. Milo has been "tinkering" and threatening the stability of the entire region for 10 years trying to stir up ancient religious and ethnic hatred as a instrument to replace his former communist ideology. He is no different than Russia's Zhironovsky with regard to his nationalistic intentions.
How long do you think it would have taken him to incite unrest in the Serb dominated locations of Macedonia in coming years? Hungary??
Would it be a repeat of the Hitlers annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland?? Hmmmm...
Sure there were pro-democracy movement in Serbia, but Milo was undermining and subverting their activities at every turn by firing their representatives in the gov't the minute they showed any disloyalty to his authority. He fired his intelligence chief and Army commanders, replacing them with thugs like Arkan.
Some tolerance of democratic reforms...
