Hi Charent-...Sun To Serve Up Flapjack Server (05/21/99, 8:08 p.m. ET)

Sun Microsystems soon is expected to unveil a server line targeting ISPs and other service providers.
Code-named Flapjack, the small footprint, stackable server appears as flat as a notebook computer.
Sun CEO Scott McNealy showed off the server to an audience at the company's ServiceProvider.com launch earlier this month and said Sun would unveil details soon.
Pulling a black sheet away from a stack of Flapjacks, McNealy said, "This is what your data center will look like in the very, very near future."
He said that since footprint and space "really matters to [ISPs and other service providers], Flapjack will be their server of choice."
Spokespeople at Sun, in Palo Alto, declined to comment on the details of Flapjack and exactly when it will be released.
Flapjack fits into Sun's ServiceProvider.com initiative, which it launched to tackle what the company sees as a changing Internet economy.
Key to the initiative is Sun's plan to compensate its sales force to spur sales and stimulate revenue for service providers.
While the company says its competitors focus on the ISP market, its own initiative addresses the entire service provider community -- which includes systems integrators, resellers,ISVs, and Web developers -- to enable Web-based service delivery.
Sun said it is trying to position itself as the computing infrastructure that service providers will require -- a so-called provider to service providers.
The new program consists of more than 20 new products, business practices, and services.
