Ian, here's a posting that I sent to Meathead. What do you think?
"Meathead, I suspect there are a large number of home based business, and people who telecommute. This class of home users must be growing. They all, or most, need pc's, with internet access. An appliance won't serve the needs of these users. I suspect they need extra phone lines, fax machines, copiers, and who knows what else. I'm sure Dell has this market figured out. If you go to the Dell web-site, you'll see a link to pc's that are marketed to home/home office users. So, although there will be a market for appliances, webtv, etc., I sure don't see the home computer going away. In fact, I see it getting more feature rich, powerful, and cheaper...through the continue use of semiconductor integration...such as a computer on a chip."
An internet appliance isn't a pc. I sure would have a tough time doing a spread sheet on an appliance, and I'm not interested in using some website to prepare my spread sheet and store the data.
