Newsbytes, Tuesday, May 18, 1999 at 10:42

MAKATI CITY, PHILIPPINES, 1999 MAY 18 (NB) -- Compaq
[NYSE:CPQ] will take AltaVista public at some time in the future,
but not in the next few weeks.

This statement was sent to Newsbytes today by Paul Blinkhorn,
regional managing director of Compaq ASEAN, in response to an
apparent "rush of interest" for AltaVista shares after Newsbytes
published a story on May 13, 1999, citing that the AltaVista will
have an initial public offering (IPO) in the next few weeks.

Blinkhorn was in Manila recently to update the press about the
developments at Compaq after the resignation of chief executive
officer (CEO), Eckhard Pfeiffer, as well as for the launch of
Compaq's ES40 Alpha server.

AltaVista, one of the leading Internet search engines, is an
independent company that is wholly owned by Compaq.

fyi cpq officials have repeatedly stated ipo will be before yearend

cpq will spike with the announcement........

best of luck
