<<rr...You do yourself and injustice. That kind of thinking is not heresy. Many indigenous peoples live on land they paid nothing for but, they believed that it was wrong to own a plot of mother earth. In most cases, their neighbors did not covet their ground and all lived in relative peace.Their spats and battles were not over land, but were to settle disputes over insults and/or family matters such as infidelity, rape, physical abuse, etc>>
That is patently false. I have just to mention four examples to make my point: Souix, Iroquis, Aztec, Inca. The only difference between the native americans and Europeans was 1.) the natives didnt possess firearms or advanced metallurgy to produce more effective killing instruments 2.) they didnt have the populations and subsequent political and cultural institutions to make full blown territorial warfare possible ala Europe. Where populations did reach an enabling structural level, the natives were as bloody and savage as any Spanish conquistador, if not more so.
To say that the native americans were noble savages living in peace with their environment and neighbors is just wrong. Period. And to argue that we wronged the native americans because they just peacefully wanted to "get along" is historical revisionism. |
