Something is really out of wack with the "free enterprise" system with respect to farming and I'm not sure how it will right itself if it ever can. This has been a problem for longer than we have been around as evidenced by all the government price support programs and history books.

Late last year, hog prices dropped to under 10 bucks per hundred weight - yes 10 bucks! Did you notice a price drop in the grocery store? The Minneapolis Fed was writing all sorts of papers why this was happening and comparing it to the Prisoner's Dilemma game theory. Ok, Fed eggheads, that all sounds great and there is likely much truth to it, but did you guys know one of the biggie meat packers, Michigan's Thorn Apple Valley, coincidentally went out of business? Does the possibility of price collusion among the remaining packers cross your mind? No.

There was an enterprising hog farmer in Iowa who got the idea to let some of his hogs go feral in a patch of woods he had and let people hunt them for $100 or so. (A feral pig is one tough hombre) He would make 100 bucks, rather than 30, the hunters would get a bunch of great meat as well as the day hunting - everyone would be happy. Well, not quite everyone. The PETA and AR types found out about this plan and descended on the poor guy and he pulled the plug on his survival plan. He should have made the PETA loonies buy his pigs for 100 a copy and let them take care of 'em.
