If the high hopes of Norfolk Southern and CSX for Their acquisition of Conrail hold up, generating increased traffic on both systems while lowering rates to shippers, there will be many beneficiaries beyond the two big railroads.

As truck-line railroads rationalized their systems throughout the east, many branch lines and lesser routes couldn't economically run big time and fully unionized . But some had enough customers to justify continued small-time operation.

Dozens of short-line railroads now link to the big networks operated by Norfolk southern and CSX, and a rising tide might lift all the boats.
