I found what I needed. Thanks for the prodding mark...

Microsoft has a free upgrade deal if you bought office between Jan 1 and Jul 31, 1999. It requires a dated receipt and either the original boxtop or the manual's title page. Since the version I ordered is OEM, it probably won't come with either a manual or a box, so I'm screwed.

I found this review from the LA Times on the Microsoft web-site. Sounds like the new version is definitely worth getting:

So, I'll be cancelling my order and waiting to see the pricing on the new version. (Actually, the pricing is already available and it looks like it will be similar to the previous version, but I don't know if I'll be able to get the special OEM deal).
