Thank Ian for this post (repost from Cymer thread). I wonder if this is the start of the move to 300 MM. It seems that all eyes were on Intel and DRAM manufacturers but maybe the shift will occur first among the foundries as they look to add capacity at the leading edge of production technology. While the news release says nothing about automation and PRIA specifically, all the research I've read indicates that 300 MM wafer plants will have to increase automation for several reasons 1) to reduce cost of operation 2) with investment dollars rising to speed operation and increase through-put and 3) to reduce losses due to damage in handling which is increases in importance as the value of larger wafers increases. From what I remember Lehman estimates the average 300 MM wafer fab will have something like $60-$70MM in automation equipment which is an incredible opportunity for PRIA.

Dow Jones Newswires

TAIPEI -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM) is planning to build a 12-inch wafer plant with unit Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp., a spokesperson at the world's largest pure chip foundry said Friday.

It will be the first plant that Taiwan Semiconductor will build with Vanguard, a 27%-owned unit that is listed on the island's Over-the-Counter market, the spokesperson said.

No other details were immediately available.

Local newspapers reported that work on the facility is slated to begin next year, with production expected in 2001. The plant will use leading-edge 0.13 micron manufacturing technology, they added.

At 0345 GMT (11:45 p.m. EDT Thursday), Taiwan Semiconductor's stock was trading NT$4.50 (US$1=NT$32.788) higher at NT$115.00 on volume of 49.1 million shares. Memory chip maker Vanguard was trading NT$0.70 higher at NT$25.50 on volume of 5.0 million shares.
