I've been reading too much purity-subversive literature lately, I guess. <g> And it sounds "wrong" to me to use "him" to refer to three girls and two guys (although it is still considered "correct"). "Him or her" is, of course, preposterous. Now, somebody in the alt.usage.english newsgroup was working on developing a new gender-neutral pronoun to use in such cases. But I don't think that is likely to sound euphonious either -- until we get used to it.
