How does Norm manage to get his name in so many publications? He must have a good publicist. Here he is again in the latest Fortune. A letter from John E. That same issue has an article about insider trading enabled by payment for order flow. An apparently wide spread abuse that is hard to detect. It's my understanding that this practice goes on for NASDAQ stocks only, which IMHO is reason alone
to shift to the NYSE.

"The only flaw in your recommendation for established companies to spin-off internet ventures is the assumption that they can expect those ventures to reach an obscenely high market-cap. Today's market is an aberration not the norm. The telephone had an impact on the stock market, I'm sure... it did not change its fundamentals. Every company did not rush to make their call-centers. All it will take for Drugstore.com to go to a less than zero market cap is a slight correction. Hyping with mega-bucks borrowed off a high-priced stock works very well. It fades away as fast. Who'll care to see Godzilla today ?

The only reason hype has worked for companies like Amazon and Yahoo, is because the population is only just being introduced to the concept of the Internet. For many, their first forays have been on Yahoo or Amazon. As the population understands the medium and becomes e-savvy, sites like Amazon and Yahoo will become commoditized very soon. The latest technology will win, because it takes very little

The remark about call centers is incomplete. John E's error, not mine. Also, the last sentence seems to stop abruptly without completion. But I think he is right about good technology winning in the end.
