There is an intermittent error of this kind that I have noticed on some machines running winNT workstation with IE4.01 SP1. These were Compaq Deskpro 4000 PII 300 machines with SCSI disk systems. An analysis of the event logs revealed nothing. We suspected it was something to do with IE4 since the effect started randomly shortly after it was installed. Upgrading to IE5.0 completely eliminated the crashing. I've worked on many machines in different corporations, this is not a usual occurrence and it wasn't obvious what was causing it except that we knew it wasn't happening before.
It always happened when the user tried to go to a new page. the interaction between the OS, browser and memory seemed to go into an unstable state periodically causing a crash.
Try downloading Microsoft's regclean utility and running it. They've improved it in the last year. I've used it regularly with no problems. It removes problems caused by program installs and uninstalls.
