THC, there would be huge pressure to reniflate in the US, just as there was during the Depression. The problem is, to reflate, you have to have people willing to borrow money to add more capacity. You have to have consumers willing to mortgage their future to buy beanie babies. You need govt. officials to ignore their chances at reelection and return to heavy deficit spending, something I see as very unlikely. And you need confidence from both the corporate and consumer sector. I think that confidence will be hard to restore once many 401Ks are wiped out and most of the options with which employees have been paid expire worthless. The govt. will try to push on the infaltion string, but the string only moves when conditions are right.
