Re: MSFT Adding Thin Client Features for Free?

Lucius,
First question (among many others) and this is the BIG question. Can MSFT actually pull another Internet Explorer disaster and add a competitors capabilities for free? What a huge question. I think this would once again put MSFT in the DOJ spotlight. Either you or someone else(Mike B.?) already brought up this subject upstream of this post.

Isn't it going to be hard to imagine they will be doing this, considering the MSFT legal problems they are already embroiled in. What does, "optional," mean? But a cusory glance at the features of 2000 Server Terminal Services, it kind of appears MSFT is going to be adding some CTXS features for no extra charges? But the devil will be in the details.

The second clip is from DIGGING into Microsoft's website. It's still not easy to find "thin client" info on their website.

Here Comes Windows 2000 Server......Microsoft has announced that TSE will be integrated into Windows 2000 Server as an optional service that can be enabled when the server is configured (like RAS). The big question has been what new features Microsoft will add to Terminal Services and the RDP protocol under Windows 2000 Server. Customers that expect to get products and capabilities for free from Microsoft (ex. Internet Explorer) instead of paying for and/or installing a competing product (ex. Netscape Navigator) have been expecting Microsoft to develop capabilities that parallel MetaFrame and add them into Windows 2000 Server for free.

Q:Are the Terminal Services in Windows 2000 Server Beta 3 feature-complete?

Terminal Services in Windows 2000 Server Beta 3 is feature-complete; however, Microsoft will continue to respond to customer requests during the Beta 3 evaluation process to enhance or modify the feature set to meet customer needs. Pricing, packaging and licensing of Windows 2000 Server have not yet been announced.
