Oh, I think it's pretty clear that it is. In fact I think that most interactions with other folks involve such an "exercise" as one of their many facets. One either chooses to make an effort or, in effect, says "Screw it, let them figure out what I'm trying to say."

As to what my near contemporaries thought about this matter, I simply do not know, but I doubt whether they saw much of a connection to firearms in the schools.
