The chemistry in that link was a classic exemplar of how dangerous a little knowledge could be. Hydrochloric acid turning fats negative? Still wiping the tears I am.
Seriously - Roche has just released a new weight drug (Xenical) that blocks fat absorption. It's as if all that fat were so much Olestra. And Ish hit the nail right on the thumb. Our hindmost sphincters have evolved to tightly seal water-based liquids - and to cunningly strain excess vapors from the more condensed phases. But grease seeps.
I hold little hope that an herbal remedy would affect serum cholesterol level. There are various prescription meds. There's cholestyramine - which really does work in the manner advertised for the Lipolean material. It absorbs fat onto a spongy material that gets excreted in the normal no-leaks manner. There are the statins (like Lovastatin - Merck?) that tinker with cholesterol biosynthesis. Now there's Xenical. I don't think it is intended for cholesterol control - rather it is an obesity med.
My cholesterol has been creeping up these past few years. So I sympathize with your bro-in-law.
