<<You, and others, keep mentioning the ancient ancestors as being European, Polynesian and Asian. I guess I am behind the times but, some time ago, I read about the finding of ancient relics in the area of the eastern side of what was once the Bering land bridge. It seemed that the conclusion of those that made the studies, that the ancestors of NAs were primative Mongolian nomads. Maybe other evidence has been uncovered. If so, I hope it is physical evidence and not some academic theory espoused by some prof who wants to write a book>>
The theory about a land bridge crossing around 10-11000 years BP was still the theory that was being taught when I went to college, and I havent been out of college very long. The Clovis theory had problematic areas, as there was evidence that didnt fit, much of which was quoted in that Newsweek article. It surprises me as well to hear that new research has posed some new questions about how America was populated. It has been traditionally concieved as being three waves of immigrants: mongoloid paleoindians coming across first, followed by Athabaskans from Siberia (the group the Apaches belong to), and finally maritime migrations of Inuit groups along the Arctic circle. Adding other Asian and European (!!) groups to the mix really stirs things up. Im sure there are a lot of heated discussions going on in academic circles about this, its revolutionary. |
