British Telecom to Offer Free Calls to Internet, Telegraph Says

London, May 23 (Bloomberg) -- British Telecommunications
Plc, Europe's second-largest phone company, is to offer free
Internet access with no call charges, the Sunday Telegraph
reported, citing unnamed ''City analysts''. BT is in talks with
the Office of Telecommunications, the industry regulator, which
needs to be convinced that there are no subsidies for the
Internet unit from other services. The move would seize the
initiative from Dixons Groups Plc's Freeserve Internet unit,
which pioneered no monthly charges for the Internet, the paper
said.

BT said last week fourth-quarter profit rose 36 percent on
demand for Internet and data services, a market expected to more
than double in the next five years.
