Saturday May 22, 9:46 am Eastern Time Company Press Release 3Com CEO Delivers Commencement Address for Widener University's Class of '99 3Com CEO Eric Benhamou Pushes the New Knowledge-Based Economy and Advocates Continuous Education SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 22, 1999--''You will need to work intensely to make the connection to information a new inalienable right, just like the right of assembly and the right for free speech,'' 3Com CEO Eric Benhamou told the graduating class of Widener University today during his commencement address.
Benhamou outlined the challenges and opportunities of the new knowledge-based economy for the school's 1,329 graduating seniors, and urged vigilance in the information age.
''In the age of the Internet, you will need the wisdom and measure to preserve our freedoms and yet protect against the indiscriminate dissemination of information that incites to violence, racism and crime,'' Benhamou said.
Widener University, a 178-year-old multi-disciplinary academic institution, is distinguished for being a early adopter of Internet2, the partnership among federal research agencies and leaders in the information technology industry to help the nation's most prominent universities build next-generation computer networks that support advanced education and research applications.
Benhamou noted how Widener has distinguished itself as a forward-looking and innovative institution that has embraced high technology. Using Widener as an information technology model to other higher education facilities, he pointed to the drastic changes the university has seen in the past four years, such as the increase in available Internet connections from 300 in 1995 to more than 7,500 today, as well as an increase of campus computer labs from three to seven. The university outfitted the campus library, classrooms and dorm rooms with next-generation instructional technologies that deliver a wide range of voice, video and data applications on converged, high-speed ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) networks.
As members of the new knowledge-based economy, the class of 1999, will face significant risk in alienation due to faster paced work and personal lifestyles, the 24-hour society, and the end of the nine-to-five work schedule, Benhamou predicted. He advised the graduating seniors to continuously pursue their education, as the those who are full participants of the information age will move ahead in today and tomorrow, while those who have been deprived of or ignored the opportunity will be unable to catch up in the future.
Said Benhamou, ''In the old world, education was a process with a beginning and an end, graduation day being the end, leading to a job and a career that leverage these skills. In the new world, education is a life-long process. The rapidly shifting skill requirements of the 21st Century workforce will require you to continuously update your skills and reinvent your career along the way, creating new opportunities for personal growth and wealth.''
