Mike, This is exactly why I dumped my position in Cisco a month ago. Suggested reading: "Only the Paranoid Survive" by Andy Grove. I believe Cisco is going thru a Strategic Inflection Point with their router technology. I feel they will pull thru, because of their stature in the industry, but much of what I read (in my humble understanding of this business) is that they are trying to strangle the market - hardware & software - (vertical market of the IBM, DEC of old) instead seeking open standard (horizontal market). This is what I loved about Noam's presentation on TV . .. . stick with standards, just make it faster. Everybody wants no hassle, faster.
