Analysis paralysis... :) I like it.
I happen to believe that at the current moment Sunw would be a good 1.Long term investment (1 year plus) The fundamentals are strong. Sun has had posative earnings for quite a while with healthy growth. The company has a good product with a proven track record, and a demand, not only in the US but overseas. Even though Intel+WinNT is a good combination (I personally have a NT/Pentium Pro ), I'd like you to show me a NT platform that can fulfil the needs of a company like American Airlines and their need for robust, reliable, proven, 'mission critical' Hardware/OS/Software (SABRE). (I only bring up this NT point to argue against a big misconception about NT systems blowing Sun away) And finally, on the more speculative side, there is JAVA, and the many implications of its impact on the server/client structure (discussed thoroughly on this thread).
2. Short term investment (less than 1 year.. lets say 4 months :) I think the price of SUNW has been damaged by several factors: It just touched its ALL TIME high. This would not be the first time I've seen a stock pull back (once or more) after this event. There has been a plithora of news concerning NT/UNIX/JAVA/INTERNET/NCs/and whether or not MSFT is gonna develop OFFICE in a Java version or not (seems they are now...), how these technologies fight or work together etc etc etc... this confusing tea-leaf reading of the computer world of tomorrow makes investors nervous, naturally. Especially investors that dont understand computer technology enough to make an EDUCATED guess as to how the tech market is gonna shift. But in my opinion, Sun (for reasons once again hashed out in this thread) is positioning itself to grow nearly nomatter what!!! Lastly, and most importantly the recent rumors of Q downgrades, and recommendation downgrades has pushed down the price. I believe that even if SUNW does not outperform its Q estimates like last time, we will see it cleanly break $35, in the short term.
3. Daytrade (haha really) As long as the markets (esp NASDAQ) don't go into a downward spiral today (3/12/97), it is my HUMBLE opinion that SUNW will at least see 32.375 before the market closes (notice I didnt predict a close, and I do NOT really seriously suggest daytrading anything, thats *your* business)
