This sale by COMPAQ of a piece of its internet infrastructure is puzzling. I would have thought it would be building up its assets, not disposing of them. In the absence of an explanation, it seems to suggest that a decision has been made about a COMPAQ/AV ISP which does not incorporate the Internent Exchange in Palo Alto.

SAN JOSE -- AboveNet Communications Inc. (ABOV) signed a definitive agreement to acquire the assets and liabilities of the Palo Alto Internet Exchange from Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ) for about $75 million.

In a press release Monday, AboveNet said the purchase consists of $70 million cash and an agreement to provide certain ongoing services.

AboveNet provides Internet connectivity and co-location systems for high bandwidth and business-critical applications.
