Diamond Multimedia Announces Submission of USB Cable Modem Product to CableLabs for
Certification Testing

Business Wire - May 24, 1999 09:34

VANCOUVER, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 24, 1999--Diamond Multimedia Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:DIMD), a leader in PC multimedia and Internet
connectivity, today announced the submission of a USB cable modem product to Cable Television Laboratories, Inc., (CableLabs(R)) for inclusion in the third
wave of certification testing to be conducted this year. This latest wave of testing began on May 13, 1999 and the announcement for approved modems will
occur on June 21, 1999.

"We are pleased to be positioned to expand our Internet access offerings beyond analog and DSL modems and into cable technology to continue laying the
access platform for the digitally connected home," said Jim Cady, president of Diamond Multimedia's Communications Division. "Cable modems provide
high-speed bandwidth that can be shared among multiple PCs within the home or home office. For this reason, cable modems are well suited for home networking
applications and provide a complement to our HomeFree home networking products that we are shipping today."

The increasing number of multiple PC households is helping to drive the growth of both the Internet access and home networking markets. The introduction of
cable and other broadband technologies will provide for faster Internet connections and therefore, can enhance the home networking experience. The HomeFree
line of wireless- and phoneline-based home networking products is available today for Internet sharing, peripheral sharing and multi-player gaming. Diamond
Multimedia plans to deliver a "total" home communications solution by offering broadband devices that deliver faster Internet connections and HomeFree home
networking products capable of distributing the higher bandwidth among all networked PCs in a home.

Through the use of cable TV wires for transmission, cable modems deliver Internet access speeds of up to 40 Mbps. Additionally, cable modems operate in an
"always on" mode to maintain constant connections to Internet service providers (ISPs). With cable modem technology, consumers can avoid busy signals and
re-dialing to their ISPs. For general inquiries about cable modems, consumers can send email to cableinfo@diamondmm.com.

The cable modem product submitted by Diamond supports the DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) cable modem standard to ensure a
reliable connection with all compliant cable systems. The greater availability of DOCSIS modems will help to support nationwide interoperability between
head-end systems and end-user modems. This trend is also expected to provide more opportunities for the retail deployment of cable modems. With a widely
recognized brand name and strong channel partners, Diamond Multimedia is positioned to be a logical retail supplier to the cable modem market and
concurrently offers cable industry multiple system operators (MSOs) a product for their customer base.

Cable modems that successfully complete the certification process will receive the CableLabs Certified(TM) seal. This seal can be used on retail packaging to
easily identify that the product complies with the CableLabs cable modem specification. Diamond Multimedia also today announced the formation of a
partnership with the GVC Group, a telecom and computer manufacturing company based in Taiwan, to design and market the new cable modems.
