Hi Peter, sorry for the delay in responding to your post but I'm hot and heavy into negotiating a contract for a new home. Househunting has become a life and death struggle. We've been at it for almost 1.5 years. Finally found one that fits our pocketbooks and our souls.

Regarding your question, I had some success IDing trending stocks(see post #10139). This scan yielded 200+ stocks each for up and down trends. I discovered that Richard's BBB scan also yields many stocks in an uptrend.

Haven't had much luck writing a scan for stocks in a trading range. Decided to create my own list by selecting about 100 ranging stocks from my database. Slow process but since I'm using these stocks just to study indicators, only have to do it once. Discovered some interesting indicators:

- MACD/DEMA(12,26,9) gives timely entry signals. I'm using it as a confirming signal;

- FORECAST OSCILLATOR(5,3) seems to be a good short-term (2-4 days) indicator. Good early buy signals in uptrends but unreliable for short-term sells in uptrends. Good confirming signal for short term ranging stocks.

- LINEAR REGRESSION INDICATOR(c,28) w/18d SMA. Crossovers gives reliable intermediate buy signals in uptrends especially steep uptrends. I've done some system tests using this for buys and sells. It compares favorably to other systems discussed here such as StochRSI(14), StochRSI(8,5), CCI(13) and MACD(13,34,89).

Have you looked at any of these?

GBAGL,

Mike
