Well, John, I figured that our main point of disagreement would be over Milosevic, not Lincoln. Lincoln was in danger from the start because he represented a moderate abolitionist position that was not going to have the votes in Congress for at least several years, period. Forget all of this "states rights" and "tariff imposition" stuff. The issue was always slavery...On Milosevic, he represented an unacceptable Serbian hegemony over the other constituent republics. Even granting that there was reason to contest the splintering of Yugoslavia, the subsequent savagery that Milosevic sponsored in Bosnia would tarnish any claim to comparison to Lincoln, as would his dictatorial rule, which far exceeds any security justification. Similarly, even if Arkan and other paramilitary leaders are responsible for the atrocities in Kosovo, there is ample reason to think that they operate with Milosevic's connivance...By the way, I think that we ought to wave prosecution of Milosevic, in order to resolve this quickly.... |
