None Dare Call It Treason coffeeshoptimes.com by ZACK NGUYEN Sunday, May 2, 1999
America is naked.
Due to astonishing incompetence and perhaps outright treason, China now has every piece of information worth having concerning our nuclear arsenal. Jeff Gerth, writing for The New York Times, found that spying by Taiwanese national Wen Ho Lee has compromised "virtually every nuclear weapon in the United States arsenal, government and laboratory."
Why? Why, why, why? Why would anyone, even Bill Clinton, consign our children and our children's children to a possible nuclear holocaust? Is Bill Clinton entirely mad or, as some have suggested, is he a clinical psychopath?
If recent reports are true, there is almost nothing in our nuclear arsenal left to steal. There is no way to stop China now -- extra security provisions suggested by Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson are the equivalent of putting a lock on your house after it is already empty.

What deeply disturbs experts is that Mr. Lee stole "legacy codes" that include the complete story of the United States nuclear program. Dr. Matthew G. McKinzie, former Los Alamos researcher, stated, "It's the distillation of 50 years of work, over 1,000 nuclear tests and thousands upon thousands of man-hours."
Clinton has told the American people dozens of times that there are "no nuclear weapons targeting our children" and variations of such. Every time he said it, he knew it was a lie. As I write this, China has at least a dozen nuclear ICBM's capable of striking the United States.
Dr. McKinzie called the espionage by Wen Ho Lee at Los Alamos laboratory, "an unprecedented act of espionage, in its scope," and added, "The espionage in the Manhattan Project [would] pale in comparison."
Robert S. Norris, a senior analyst and nuclear weapons expert at the Natural Resources Defense Council: "It's staggering -- I'm still in shock here ... If someone had access to [Lee's] unclassified computer, this could be all over the world."
Congressman Chris Cox, who has completed an investigation into Chinese nuclear espionage, said that China has stolen "the crown jewel of our nuclear arsenal."
According to an April 30 Washington Times editorial, the Justice Department repeatedly denied the FBI request to wiretap Wen Ho Lee when his espionage was discovered. This despite the fact that 99.9% of the 700 wiretap requests by the FBI were granted by the Justice Department. The Office of Intelligence Policy review maintained that there was insufficient evidence to warrant a wiretap, and Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder denied the FBI's desperate appeal.
It does not take a genius to understand what is going on here. This is the most shocking treason that America has witnessed since Benedict Arnold joined the British. What more does Congress need? Instead, they bicker and equivocate over the release of the Cox Report.
What would cause the Clinton White House to allow this? Much of it can probably be consigned to the normal liberal "understanding" of the world and America's place in it. As amazing as it sounds, most members of the Clinton Administration would not consider selling nuclear technology to China to be treason. Clintonites probably feel that those concerned about Chinese espionage are Cold War dinosaurs, that we no longer live in an "Us against Them" world, that regional boundaries mean little, that we should accept each country's differences and strive for mutual "tolerance" as well as cultural "understanding."
This despite the fact that China continues building up it's military to take over Taiwan while holding America hostage with nuclear ICBM's. Privately, most Clintonites probably feel that conservatives' excitement over China is misplaced and doubtless done for "political reasons."
But it is not.
Treason is treason, whether it's Benedict Arnold or Aldrich Ames. Apparently liberals just don't see the threat in arming a hostile Communist nation. Very well. Whether they are too corrupt, too stupid, or hate America too much to care, what is essential is that the entire treasonous affair becomes public. Those that bear culpability should be imprisoned, shunned and their names never spoken again by an American without the label "traitor." |
