Joe, As I understand it, digital cameras are about a single order of magnitude behind film under ALL conditions. Recently, I came across a link that stated film is roughly equal to 10-16 mega-pixels, whereas higher end digital cameras are in the 1-2 Mpixel range.
In the post you referenced, you missed the point about that approach film quality for standard sized prints. I wasn't claiming under all conditions, just for near standard sized prints, ie 4x6.
I think it's also true that the consumer market is shifting away from concerns about film "graininess" and resolution to speed and convenience. Witness the popularity of ISO 200, 400, and 800 films. Recently, I have had some trouble finding ISO 100 film. So it would seem that the consumer either doesn't know/care that higher speed film typically results in a lower resolution picture, maybe doesn't care about enlarging, or is simply confused and equates higher ISO number with higher quality and can't tell the difference. You know, "ISO speed sells", etc.
