The timing of these IPR dispute leaks is interesting when one considers the Q 3G chipset announcements. It's pretty clear who needs who in this scenario. One thing I wonder about though is what is the meaning of backwards compatible to IS95A and IS95B? Will a ThinPhone bought next week work on a CDMA2000 network without software modification? Will data rates just be slower? How does this work?

Teros' article at debry.com is right on about a few things, especially that technology fragmentation has slowed down subscriber growth here in US, and that GPRS and EDGE will extend the life of GSM (see the Lucent piece: siliconinvestor.com. But how much capacity will all this GSM data eat? From the looks of the QCOM MSM5000 press statements, CDMAone/2000 is getting more and more efficient and has no 3G upgrade issues. Can this be said of GSM? How long will operators continue building out new GSM networks?

Of course I'm not so sure..:-).. one can just lump WCDMA in with these GSM enhancements, and I'm also skeptical of the reasoning he attributes to the NTT decision to go with WCDMA, ie that they chose vendors who can provide both handsets and infrastructure. As we all know, Nokia, Ericsson and Motorola are NOT Japanese companies and I seriously doubt that NTT would make a decision that deliberately excludes Japanese firms so we can presume they expect Sony, Toshiba, etc.and therefore QCOM to be able to participate.. Lucent is also on board. And once again Tero presumes the specs will be something entirely new, very different from CDMA2000.

Wasn't today supposed to be the day that the QCOM/ERICY infrastructure deal closed? I have a hunch there will be some infrastructure contract announcements upon consummation..

Looks like we just might get a pretty nice buy op in the next few days if the overall tech market cooperates. How about somewhere in the vicinity or a bit above the 50 day moving average around 80, which also happens to be where that huge post earnings gap is?
