I've wrote about this before but IBM's big lead was that they came out with 3.2GB/platter GMR heads when everyone else was just getting into MR heads (at 1.6-2.1GB/platter). IBM took to the desktop market in a big way to take advantage of this lead so a large percentage of their sales increase was likely in desktop units.
If you look at their current product offering you will find that they have now limited their offerings to the high end of the desktop market where there is less competition. Furthermore at 5.1GB/platter IBM is no longer the areal density leader. I would thus expect that they will give back a large part of these revenue gains although the profitability of their drive operations will likely improve.
