Michael,

I disagree that the tech is here, in a high volume data entry type operation performance has to improve several fold before it is going to make users happy. Even my internet banking s/w drives me nuts over a 56k modem at home and I am waiting for DSL rollouts. And that is not a high volume application.

As for farm of cheap boxes, I like to use the voicemail analogy. If I were to start a new business would I try to program and maintain (oh, the horror!) an array of answering machines or rent mailboxes from my local telephone company? I believe that the same model holds here. And since such rented space needs to scale well, it is going to need huge boxes.

I may be wrong, technology changes at the blink of an eye. Video on demand was the rage in the early 90's, then fizzled. Service on demand may go the same path. But the model makes a lot of sense to me.
