History has shown there aren't too many success story with proprietary
technology. Look at the sad fate of Apple, Sony Beta format,
IBM mainframe ... Proprietary technology only succeeds when there is
a clear advantage over the competition. But in this case, tag switching
and router technology from Cisco is not any better if not worse than
IP switching. Again in IP switching, Ipsilon, 3Com, Cascade, and IBM
are trying to pull out their own proprietary standard. MRV is the only
company who sticks to the Ethernet standard and not reinvents the wheel.
Customers want competitive products that are compatible with each
others, and customers don't want to learn a new technology if they can
help. The latter reason is why ATM is also dead: too complex. After
2 years on the market, I think, companies are still struggling to
use it. IP switching will take over router/tag switching and Fast Ethernet
and Gigabit Ethernet will beat ATM.

KISS principle always rules, Keep It Simple Stupid!

Mike.
