Michael, it is a tough nut, and it depends on the type of book. I have not gotten traction in that area yet myself, because I am deemed too intellectual and not commercial enough, and do not yet have a wide enough readership. However, if it humorous or inspirational, it is a good idea to look into regional publishers.Sometimes they are in the market for something besides cookbooks (the mainstay of such presses), and they tend to like quirkiness. Also, there a number of small presses in urban areas that specialize in poetry chapbooks and other smaller works. If she can find a chapter or section that lends itself to publication on a stand alone basis, finding a reputable magazine or journal to place it can help generate interest...
