IBM, Others To Announce NC Compatibility

NEW YORK - International Business Machines, Oracle, Sun Microsystems and
Netscape Communications say they have reached an agreement to enable
so-called network computers from one vendor to operate with other systems
and software.

The companies will announce that they have agreed on a set of specifications
-- a road map for software developers -- that will enable software developers to
write applications across several computing platforms in the network
computing area.

Network computers are scaled-down lower cost computers that access the
Internet and other networks. Sun Microsystems and IBM have introduced
network computers. Oracle has been a big proponent of the computers and
issued specifications last May for the design of network computers, so the
hardware would be interoperable.
