Black holes are extremely heavy. A lot of them and the universe would collapse on itself.

Stephen Hawking and his pals are looking to see if they can find enough cold, dark matter to make the universe fall back on itself, to 'recycle' so to speak. They aren't bothering with black holes, but they surely would if there was a chance that they were common enough to contain a lot of mass. At this time there doesn't appear to be anywhere near the requisite mass to make the universe stop expanding. Heat death, here we come...
