"Chomskey could be right, but is not a recognized authority, has been subjected to solid criticism, and does not suffice as a mere reference..."

Ummm...

You know, I referenced a Carl Sagan analogy recently, on my way to making a point that was entirely my own, and in your response you pointed out that you did not feel that Sagan was, I believe, "wise." Or it might have been "sagacious," although that sounds more like a PiMac word. Nonetheless, it was disconcerting to me at the time, because I didn't see how your opinion of Sagan had any bearing on anything. The point that I was making was completely independent of him-- I was simply borrowing some of his phrasing in order to make that point. I believe that when you use someone else's concept or phrasing or what-have-you, you have a duty to acknowledge the source. It really doesn't matter to me whether the source is respected in his field or living in his mother's basement writing in crayon on empty grocery bags. All that matters is whether the statement conveys something that is useful in explaining what makes the world go 'round.

And.. well..... I guess that's it.
