China Telecom Breakup Complete by Year's End, Mobile Communications by 3Q
(5/24/99) The breakup of China's telecommunications monopoly, China Telecom, will be complete by the end of the year, and its mobile communications operations will be spun off by the third quarter, said Wu Jichuan, the head of China's Ministry of Information Industry, according to the May 21 Zhengquan Shibao (Securities Times).
The restructuring will split China Telecom into three separate companies by sector -- China Fixed-line Telephone Company, China Mobile Communications Company, China Satellite Communications, and China Paging Company.
So far, only the paging services of China Telecom have been formally split. Wu said the separation of the paging company is nearly complete, with China Unicom, the country's number two telecom provider, assuming these services.
Wu also said his ministry would distribute guidelines to provincial authorities to help in the restructuring process, as well as ask officials for their input and suggestions.
