Well, Christ did say, and I am paraphrasing here so forgive me if I don't have it right, "ask, and you shall receive." I think he was talking about enlightenment, but I can feel compassion for people who have little but the shirt on their backs asking God for more. Something to eat, maybe, or a roof over their heads, or to be cured of cancer. I don't believe God gets irritated. As for only believing in God because they are afraid not to, I think that's a step up the evolutionary ladder from not believing in God at all. As for the "exclusive club" part, again, this is regrettable, but I still think most people do the best they can with the limited resources that they have.
