tonty: I did not read your post because, if you look at the timing, you will understand that I was in the WSJ web site at the time you posted. I was cutting the article and about to paste it. Your post happened to be the most convenient. It was not addressed to you and I did not interrupt what I was doing to read your post. It was a coincidence. In any case, your post was the company PR, mine was the WSJ report of the company PR. The WSJ often updates and elaborates its commentary on company PR through the day, and it is normal to have different version of the same PR on this thread. It happens all the time.


COMPAQ cuts prices all the time for a variety of reasons such as:

(1) To maintain market share in the face of price cuts from the competition. You may recall that Dell said it made a mistake in the 4Q 1998 in not cutting prices.

(2) To move inventory to make way for new models or updated models.
