Yes. The increasing number of individual day traders is another reason for shift in percentage of institutional trades. In general when people talk about x% of trades are due to... they are refering to the total volume of trades or the dollar value of total trades. But it is really up to the speaker to clarify what he means, so I suppose some could be refering to the number of trades, though this would be unlikely.

Re winning a loser's game and do-it-yourself investing:
The trick is simple; don't play the same game. I've found that the single most important decision to make when investing, is deciding over what time horizon you are going to stay with your position. All other decisions (such as which stocks to buy) should be made accordingly. So from where I stand, the answer is to choose investment horizons with fairly different spans than the average participant.
