It is good to see some articles written about Softbank that discuss the downside of their financial structure and business plan. Although there are ample unrealized capital gains related to Son's Internet investments to cover bond redemptions, there is always a concern that a big downturn in internet stock prices could threaten that solvency. So far, it appears that Son has ample cushion, but it is hard to be sure. I've been nervous about Microsoft for the last five years and I am nervous about Softbank for some of the same reasons. Clearly the Internet will be with us in five years and only a few companies will survive and prosper. Softbank still looks like a relatively safe bet, almost conservative <G>.
