DLJ is spinning off DLJDirect their on-line trading unit to the public. DLJ will retain a large percentage ownership in stock after it goes public tomorrow under the symbol DIR. The performance of that unit will be measured or "tracked" like any other publicly traded company.... because it was a part of DLJ and they will retain some ownership it is called a tracking stock. DLJ is doing this to better realize the value of their on-line trading unit and hopes to benefit with what they and the public hopes will be exponential growth going forward.

I hope this answers your question.
