metropolitan areas in 1996. The most popular sports in ten major areas are listed below.

Los Angeles/Long Beach: Horseback Riding
New York: Calisthenics

Skateboarding Leads 1997 Sport Growth While Exercise Walking
Remains America's Favorite Activity
Out of 57 sports surveyed in 1997 by the National Sporting Goods Association,
skateboarding grew 35.8 percent to 6.3 million participants, making it the fastest growing
participant sport. Rollerskating (2x2 - not inline) had the greatest decline in participation,
down 28% from 1996. Exercise walking boasted 76.3 million participants, giving it the top
spot among America's favorite sport and recreation activities.
The chart below shows 1997 sport participation ranked by total participants. A participant
is defined as someone seven years of age or older who participated in the activity more
than once within the year.
