grantsi .. It works like this. Every person who downloads the software is prompted for a password or "key" - that key gets stored in the JAWS Key Management Server. When I send you an encrypted e-mail, the program searches to see if your key is registered - if it is, it takes your key and encrypts the e-mail and file (if a file is attached). When you receive the e-mail from me, you are prompted for your password (key) - so as long as you haven't told anyone your password (key), you're the only one who can decrypt the e-mail.

I keep referring to your password as a key, because this is the basis for what is called the Public Key Infrastructure (PKI). If you would like to read more about it, try this link - iword.com

BTW, if you forget your password, you're out of luck - JAWS can't help you. The company will be developing a key recovery module at a later date.

It is a little more technical than that, but that is the gist of it.
